Every communication service provider (CSP) knows the inherent complexities of back-office operations like billing, but perhaps no one is more familiar than Flavio Gomes, President of LogiSense Corporation, a provider of usage rating and billing solutions for the telecom, hosted communications, Machine-to-Machine (M2M/IoT) and UC industries.
Gomes met with TMCnet at Editor's Day during ITEXPO 2015, happening now through Friday in Miami, to discuss what providers must do to more effectively sell and strategically gain market share. Gomes’ main message was this: providers must understand the importance of a usage-based billing model, especially as cloud-based services that require real-time charging continue to proliferate.
“With these changes and disruptions taking place, providers are realizing that billing can’t be standardized or ignored,” Gomes said. Conversely, billing must evolve to support a buying environment focused on subscriptions, transitioning from the one-time charge to the loyal subscriber relationship that yields long-term revenue.Gomes strongly believes these marketplace changes are driving service providers toward usage-based billing models, including the tools and skills needed to successfully execute such a model. Such tools, for example, can offer providers with increased visibility into cash flow, making it easier for subscribers to buy and potentially increase their lifetime contributions, which of course drives revenue.
The challenge for service providers, he said, is managing the usage of these real-time services to create a billing model that enables them to charge customers effectively for what they use and to increase the value they create.
The key to overcoming this challenge, Gomes said, is simple: adopt a usage rating platform, which mediates different feeds of usage data rates based on a number of variables, like pooling and promotions.

“There are a number of touch points in billing—order entry, change management, order processing—that service providers must intrinsically understand before transitioning. If you choose the wrong provider that isn’t intimate to your needs then you will undoubtedly suffer consequences.”
