“Strategic Innovation” – The lifeblood of your Telecom Strategy

June 19th, 2013 | Posted by Louie Conceicao

In a recent global survey conducted by Accenture across various sectors (one of which was the telecommunications market), 93% of corporate executives surveyed said the long-term success of their company’s strategy depended on their ability to innovate. However, only 34% believe their company has a well-defined innovation strategy.

Among the leading failure to innovate reasons were:

  • Lack of customer relevance
  • Slow speed-to-market
  • Incorrect pricing of new products or services
  • Shortage of new or unique value propositions

When asked, less than one-fifth of Communications Service Providers (CSP) stated that they plan to introduce new products and services on a regular basis in order to satisfy customers and be competitive.

As Unified Communications and Convergence continues to blur the lines between competitors and collaborators it is becoming increasingly more important for today’s CSP to start defining a dedicated process and budget to bring larger scale innovation to market.

EngageIP Billing for Communication Service Providers (CSP) can help you overcome some of the innovation challenges above by allowing you to deploy a single charging and billing system that is flexible, integrated and converged.  Even your back-office functions like billing can benefit from innovation to be more customer-centric and capable of providing the digital products and services customers’ desire.

Nike Fuel Band (Credit: Nike)

In early 2012, Nike introduced FuelBand and Google announced its Glass Project… since then the global design and business community has exploded.

If it wasn’t difficult enough deciding which clothes to wear, in the future we may be faced with a new dilemma…

What wearable technology?

Whether you see yourself wearing an embedded technology accessory or not this latest sensor revolution will have a huge impact on our lives in the next 5-10 years.

Like the PCs of the past and mobile devices and tablets are doing today, wearable technology might just be positioned to be the next player in innovation. According to Credit Suisse, the market (approx. $4 billion today) could jump to $50 billion within 5 years.

Service Providers have good reason to be optimistic as this opens the door to new revenue opportunities…

  1. Increased demand for reliable mobile data services.
  2. Provide consumers with more valuable experiences via increased importance of Big Data.
  3. Partner with wearable technology providers to offer bundled data packages.
  4. Resell wearable devices along-side your current mobile offerings.

And the list goes on…

As a service provider or consumer, what are your thoughts on wearable technology?

The new Wireless Code issued by the CRTC will allow Canadian consumers to cancel their mobile contracts after two years (even if they have signed on for a longer term) and also places caps on data overage and roaming charges, among numerous other things.

  • Applies to new wireless contracts beginning December 2, 2013
  • Requires wireless service providers to cap data overage charges at $50 for inside Canada and international roaming charges at $100 within a single monthly billing cycle.
  • Charges cannot be added without a consumer’s consent.

“We have been making a genuine effort over the past number of years to listen to our customers and respond with significant improvements. As a result, we already do a lot of what is in the new code,” said Ted Woodhead, Telus senior vice-president of federal government and regulatory affairs. “Telus believes that many aspects of this new code will give Canadians a strong and friendly set of protections.”

The CRTC also says it plans to conduct a formal review of the Wireless Code within three years of its implementation.

Although the ruling might bode well for consumers and make them feel like they’ve gained a little more control… one question comes to mind…

Will we see an increase in smartphone prices?

The jury is still out on this but we’d love to hear your take on the ruling and possible price hike.
